Mandatory CE Topics by State: Pain Management, Opioids, Implicit Bias, and More

Mandatory CE topic requirements are one of the most frequently overlooked aspects of pharmacist license renewal. Completing 30 hours of CE isn’t enough if you’ve missed a 2-hour mandatory topic.

Most common mandatory topics

Pain management and opioids: Required in New York (3 hours combined with palliative care), Ohio, West Virginia, and others.

Implicit bias training: Required in Illinois (1 hour), California, and an expanding list of states.

HIV/AIDS: Required in Florida (1 hour). Content covers transmission, prevention, and patient care considerations.

Domestic violence recognition: Required in Florida (2 hours), California, and others.

Child abuse identification: Required in New York, Pennsylvania (Act 31 compliance), and others.

Medical errors and patient safety: Required in Florida (2 hours).

Pharmacy law: Required in Texas (1 hour Texas law specifically), California, and others.

Documentation

Some states require documentation of mandatory topic completion separately from total CE hours. Keep certificates of completion for all mandatory topics for at least the duration of your renewal cycle. Verify specific documentation requirements with your state board.
