Pharmacy technician scope of practice has expanded significantly over the past five years. States are increasingly allowing trained technicians to perform functions previously limited to pharmacists.
Tech-check-tech (TCT)
Tech-check-tech programs allow certified pharmacy technicians to verify the work of other technicians — traditionally a pharmacist function. States with TCT authority include Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, North Dakota, and others. TCT is typically limited to unit-dose packaging verification in institutional settings with pharmacist oversight.
Vaccine administration
Several states now allow pharmacy technicians to administer vaccines under pharmacist supervision. California, Colorado, Idaho, and others have granted immunization authority to trained technicians. Requirements include ACPE-accredited immunization training and pharmacist supervision protocols.
Medication synchronization
Most states allow technicians to manage medication synchronization programs — scheduling refills, conducting adherence calls, and coordinating with prescribers. This is considered administrative rather than clinical scope in most jurisdictions.
MTM support
Some states allow technicians with additional training to support medication therapy management services under pharmacist supervision — collecting medication histories, scheduling CMR appointments, and documenting interventions.
PTCB advanced certifications
PTCB has introduced advanced certifications for technicians in specific practice areas — sterile compounding, hazardous drug management, and billing and reimbursement. Some states recognize these certifications for expanded scope.
