Telepharmacy Laws by State: 2026 Update

Telepharmacy — the use of technology to deliver pharmacy services remotely — has grown substantially since COVID accelerated regulatory flexibility. Most states now have some form of telepharmacy framework, but requirements vary significantly.

What telepharmacy covers

Telepharmacy frameworks typically address: remote order verification, remote patient counseling, remote dispensing sites supervised by a pharmacist at another location, and pharmacy intern supervision via technology.

States with established telepharmacy frameworks

North Dakota: One of the earliest telepharmacy states. Remote dispensing sites in rural areas supervised via real-time video.

Texas: Class E telepharmacy license. Remote pharmacist can supervise automated dispensing in healthcare facilities.

Washington: Remote dispensing sites allowed. Pharmacist-to-technician supervision via audio/video.

Illinois: Telepharmacy regulations effective 2021. Remote consultation and automated pharmacy systems with specific self-inspection requirements.

Multi-state telepharmacy licensing

Telepharmacists practicing across state lines need licensure in each state where they supervise dispensing or provide patient care services. If you’re supervising a remote dispensing site in Texas while located in California, you need Texas licensure.

What’s still evolving

Several states are still developing telepharmacy frameworks or updating existing rules. The intersection of telepharmacy and controlled substance dispensing remains particularly unsettled in many jurisdictions. Always verify current requirements with the specific state board before establishing a telepharmacy operation.
