At the start of your CE cycle
- Confirm your total CE hour requirement and the length of your renewal cycle
- Identify whether your state has mandatory topic requirements (e.g. pain management, implicit bias, domestic violence recognition) separate from your general hour total
- Confirm whether your CE must be ACPE-accredited
- Note whether your state caps how many home-study or on-demand hours count toward the total
- Set calendar reminders at the midpoint and 90 days before your renewal deadline
As you complete CE
- Log each completed activity with date, hours, and accreditation number
- Confirm completions are posting correctly to CPE Monitor (or your state’s tracking system) rather than assuming they transferred automatically
- Track mandatory-topic hours separately from general hours so you can confirm both requirements are satisfied independently
- Keep your own backup records (certificates, confirmation emails) in case a reporting system has a gap
Before your renewal deadline
- Confirm your logged hours meet both the total requirement and any mandatory-topic requirement
- Check your state’s renewal window — when it opens and when it closes — so you’re not renewing too early or too late
- Confirm your renewal fee amount and payment method
- If you’re short on hours, check whether your state offers an extension or hardship waiver process, and note the deadline to request one (this is generally a proactive request made before your license lapses, not an after-the-fact fix)
If you hold licenses in multiple states
- Track each state’s CE requirement and renewal date separately — cycles and mandatory topics rarely align across states
- Confirm whether any CE activity satisfies mandatory-topic requirements in more than one state, or whether each state requires its own qualifying content
- Set state-specific reminders rather than a single combined one, since deadlines will differ
