License Reinstatement

License reinstatement is the process a pharmacist follows to restore an expired, lapsed, or suspended pharmacy license back to active status.

License reinstatement is the set of steps a pharmacist must take to regain active licensure after their license has lapsed, expired, or been placed on inactive status. This is different from routine renewal: renewal happens on a regular cycle to keep an active license current, while reinstatement applies once a license has already fallen out of active status, whether that happened because a renewal deadline was missed, continuing education wasn’t completed in time, or the pharmacist chose to go inactive for a period.

The reinstatement process commonly involves catching up on any continuing education that was missed, paying applicable fees, and submitting an application demonstrating the license is being brought current. Boards may also ask about the reason for the lapse and, depending on how long the license was inactive, may require additional steps before restoring full practice authority.

Why it matters

Pharmacists returning to practice after time away — whether due to a career break, relocation, or simply an overlooked renewal deadline — need to understand reinstatement requirements before assuming they can resume dispensing. Practicing on a lapsed license, even unintentionally, can create serious problems, so confirming license status and reinstatement steps ahead of time is an important part of returning to work.

Reinstatement requirements, including how far back a lapse can go before extra steps apply, vary significantly by state. RxByState tracks these differences so pharmacists can understand what reinstating a license in a given state actually involves. Learn more at https://app.rxbystate.com/signup.
